What Is Self Care Saturday?

Self care Saturday is a day dedicated to practicing self-care by taking care of yourself. While practicing some form of self-care daily can be beneficial, self care Saturday is a great way to be intentional.

Self-care allows you to focus on taking care of yourself, recharging, and engaging in activities that promote your overall well-being.  My favorite part of self care Saturday is that it allows me to take a break from my usual responsibilities of the week and allows me from doing to now being.

There are SO many different activities and practices aimed at your well-being. To simplify it for you, this post will divide the self care Saturday activities into common areas of self-care. Think of these areas as a part of your self care Saturday checklist. There are 8 areas of self-care:

  1. Physical Self-Care: There is no mental health without physical health. Essential activities like getting restful sleep, movement, eating nutrient-dense foods, and being proactive about your health are all keys to maintaining physical self-care.
  2. Mental Self-Care: Mental self-care allows you to declutter your mind and decrease stress. There isnโ€™t one way fits all approach to this area. Some people might like to relax by reading a new book, while others might create a new recipe. Mental self-care is to relax in whatever way feels good for you.
  3. Emotional Self-Care: Your emotional well-being is CRUCIAL for your overall well-being. The main idea of this area is to get in touch with your emotions. Exploring and expressing your feelings, setting boundaries, relying on your support system, and extending self-compassion contribute to your emotional health.
  4. Financial Self-Care: Enhancing your financial wellness is as important as the other areas. Money can be a challenging topic for many, and it takes some work to overcome this fear and care about your money.  Self care Saturday is a perfect way of reframing your approach to your finances by budgeting, creating a savings goal, or seeking financial advice that supports your financial well-being.
  5. Spiritual Self-care: Nurturing your spiritual side can be rewarding and a great way to slow down. Whether you meditate, engage in self-reflection, or connect with nature, you will experience a deeper sense of meaning and align with your values.
  6. Social Self-Care: Now more than ever, human connection is vital to our well-being. Taking the time to build and nurture your relationships is an important part of self-care.
  7. Occupational Self-care: Experiencing work-life balance and satisfaction is incredibly important to your well-being. You spend much of your life working, so you want to prioritize creating that balance. Whether you choose to set boundaries between work and personal life or take your well-deserved time off to relax, finding activities that help you relax outside of work is important.
  8. Environmental Self-care: The popular saying, โ€œYour mind reflects your space,โ€ couldnโ€™t be more accurate. You want your space to be safe, nurturing, and relaxing. You can enhance this area by organizing, creating a safe space, planting a new tree, or cleaning.

By now, you realize that self-care does not just stop at physical and mental health. It is beyond bubble baths and the spa (although your self care Saturday plan can include this).

Self-care is an integral part of the reparenting process, and creating consistency around showing up for yourself is a big piece of your overall well-being puzzle. Creating a self care Saturday routine takes time, so be patient with the process.

Why Self-Care Is Important

Self-care is a popular buzz word which means you are familiar with the benefits of engaging in a regular practice. Some key reasons why self-care should be prioritized: managing stress, healthy physical and mental health, improved relationships, self-reflection, personal growth, and increased productivity.

Self-care is not self-indulgent and is required for your overall well-being. The more you prioritize yourself and your needs, the better equipped you are to navigate your life.

Self-Care Misconceptions:

There are many misconceptions surrounding self-care, which can limit our ability to engage in regular practice.

1. Self-care is selfish: The most common myth we read/hear about self-care is selfishness.  Prioritizing your needs above your own can be seen as selfish, leading people to think you are self-centered. Our society also tends to promote selflessness and sacrifice as virtues leaving you feeling guilty when you take the time to prioritize yourself.

Sometimes, there is a lack of understanding where people fail to recognize the true importance of self care Saturday or fear how they will be perceived if they place their own needs before others. Know that self-care is not selfish. It is necessary. Self-care is about prioritizing your needs to show up as your best self for other people.

2. One size fits all:  Self-care is an individualized practice, and what works for one person might not work for the next. Exploring and experimenting with different activities is important to find what best meets your needs. Self care Saturday is a great way to try different activities to add to your individualized practice.

3. Self-care is a quick fix: Self-care is not a magic solution to your life problems but rather a tool for managing your stress, mood, and overall well-being. You should be using self-care practices in conjunction with trying to problem-solve the underlying issues.

4. Self-care is time-consuming:  This misconception often keeps people from engaging in a healthy self-care practice. Your self care Saturday can involve simple tasks like listening to a song or doing a 5-minute breathing exercise. It does not have to be extravagant or require a significant time commitment. The goal is to engage in small but consistent acts of self-care.

Is It Self-Care Saturday or Self-Care Sunday?

We have all heard the famous phrase self-care Sunday, and honestly, there is no right way to have a self-care day. If you are wondering what day should be self-care day, you can choose whatever day works best for you and your circumstances.

There is no right or wrong day for self-care. Whether you choose self care Saturday night or a random Wednesday afternoon, the most important aspect is prioritizing your well-being over the day. I personally love Self care Saturday for a few reasons:

1. Weekend Kickoff: If you work Monday-Friday, you can use Sunday to reset for the upcoming week. Friday, I like to wrap up my week and finish any additional work-related tasks I did not get to during the week.

Sunday is the day I want to meal prep, go grocery shopping, and complete any errands that will set me up for success for the upcoming week. While doing this is therapeutic for me, a lot is going on. Saturday is a day when I can relax and not have any expectations. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the day to practice self-care.

2. No Sunday blues: Sunday blues is where you experience anxiety thinking about your upcoming workweek, whether that is about forthcoming deadlines, work tasks, events, or challenges. It creates a sense of unease that can make engaging in self-care challenging.

By caring for yourself on Saturday, you enter your week feeling ready to take on anything the week might throw at you. Think of it as recharge self care for the week.
